Bio-UGS Targeted biological conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to methane in pore underground storage

.

As part of the CO2-WIN funding program, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using industrial CO2 on the one hand, and to convert renewable energy in existing natural gas reservoirs into methane and store it on the other.

MicroPro GmbH is responsible for the microbiological issues in the joint project. This includes, in addition to an inventory of the organisms already present in the subsurface, over the risk assessment of microbial processes, to the possibilities of stimulating an economic methanation. As a result, an evaluation catalog of the existing German pore storage potential is targeted.

The Bio-UGS project (project poster) runs until January 2023 and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
